So much to see & do in southern Iceland

It’s been an amazing and busy week – and very hard to believe it’s Friday morning. I’d originally started this post while we drove from the eastern most part of the southern coast back to Reykjavik. It was pouring with rain from the moment we headed out the door, and we had a long drive back, with the intention of stopping to photograph the remnants of a lava field.

Auroras through the night - volcanoes during the day

At around 9pm this evening, I was beginning to review the photos I'd taken today, when Liza knocked on the door - "we have an Aurora, faint but growing!" But I digress.  Since I arrived in Iceland, we have had days of cloud, snow, rain, sleet, wind and some very brief bursts of sunshine. Driving out of Reykjavik yesterday to the Hekla Volcano region, the fields were covered in snow for kilometer after kilometer.

A glimpse of an Aurora

All the people attending the course have now arrived in Reykjavik. After breakfast, while those who'd flown in overnight from the US were catching up on sleep, I went to the Harpa Concert Hall to take some photos of this extraordinary building. It had snowed overnight - a decent 5cm. So I took a slightly different and less icy route and found some fun street art along the way.

It's a long way from Australia

It has been a day of relaxation & general catching up after the lo-o-ong flights from Australia. I arrived Friday night after about 36 hours of travelling. The flights were uneventful - unlike 13 months ago on my way to Ushuaia - although London's Heathrow airport provided the "opportunity" for several laps of Terminal 2 during the 5 hours I was there.
